National Safety Council (NSC) recognizes June as National Safety Month. Each week the NSC shines a light on an important aspect of safety. Week four is “Advance Your Safety Journey.” This is a great topic to end the month and inspire us to think about the future.

It’s easy to get into the grind of day-to-day tasks, putting out fires (figuratively or literally) and neglect to take the time to plan for the future and set goals.

Week 4 – Advance Your Safety Journey
Whether organizationally or individually, you should never be satisfied with the status quo.

Goals, Mentorship and Future Aspirations

What do you want your safety program to look and feel like in two years? How about in five years? How do you want your safety culture to change and what are the steps needed to get there? Are your goals swimming around in your head or have you written them down and given them structure and a timeline?

It’s important to have accountability in place to keep us on track. For you, is that a person or a system in place?

Do you have a mentor? Mentorship can be an integral part of the success and advancement in your safety journey.

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace, resulting in new or revised processes, automated systems and new hazards. How do you ensure you’re properly prepared to face these new hazards?

If you’re an individual safety professional, what are your future aspirations? Here are a few suggestions:
• A professional certification such as the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist
(CIH), and/or Certified Instructional Trainer (CIT)
• Complete a college or university degree program
• Strive, plan  and get that promotion!

In order to keep moving forward, you have to establish a clear picture of where you want to be.
